Smuttynose and Malaga are privately owned islands, open to visitors using kayaks, motor and sailing vessels of all sizes, and to day visitors rowing from Star or other nearby islands.

Smuttynose and Malaga form the northeast shore of Gosport Harbor. These two islands, along with Cedar, are physically located in the State of Maine. Star Island resides in New Hampshire.

Smuttynose encompasses approximately 27 acres, with a maximum elevation of 30’ above mean sea level, while Malaga consists of only 2/5 acres, with a height of 18’.

The name Malaga may have been given by Spanish Sailors, when a ship carrying wine from Malaga Spain was wrecked here in the early seventeenth-century. The earthy name of Smuttynose is said to have been suggested by the rocky profile at the southeastern point adorned with a black smudge on the end of its ‘nose’.
