Smuttynose Island is part of the Isles of Shoals; a group of old mountains, scoured and worn by weather, the sea, and historic glacial progression. Essentially the mountain tops have been worn away, revealing basalt and granite, with intrusions of igneous rocks. Trap dykes document uplifting and cracking of the earth's surface, and follow an approximate north/south orientation. Many visitors find interest in exploring and examining the island's unique geological features..

Archeology ~ Thousands of years of fishing

Recent archaeological digs have finally disproved the longstanding claim by early explorers that "upon these islands no Savages at all". Professor Nathan Hamilton, working with students and Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island  have unearthed Native American artifacts dating from 6,000 years ago to the Contact Era with settlers from New England. Scientific digs prove that Smuttynose was a European fishing outpost as early as the 1620s and a key staging point for fishing and drying Atlantic cod in the 17th and early 18th centuries.
